He is tenure professor at School of Mechanical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was also visiting professor of The University of Tokyo and has also ever served as a research fellow at Kyushu National Industrial Research Institute, Japan. He is currently the academic committee member of China Catalysis Society, the Member of Editorial Board for Journal of Environmental Science. He also serves as a Guest Professor of Kyushu University, Japan.

Photocatalysis and environmental catalysis, solar energy conversion and hydrogen energy preparation.

He has been principle investigator over numerous hydrogen energy projects, such as National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Basic Research Project (973), the National High-Tech Research and Development Plan (863) and other research projects. He has obtained more than 30 national invention patent authorizations, published 5 books, including book "Energy Materials-Principles and Applications", and published more than 200 academic papers. He is listed as Chinese Highly Cited Scholar since 2014. His work on solar photocatalytic hydrogen production achieved First Prize of Shanghai Natural Science.

He is awarded the First Class Prize (2018) and the Second class Prize (2009) of Shanghai Natural Science, Baosteel Award (2019), the First Prize of "Teaching and Educating Award" by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2019).
