    Profile

Biography: Jia Pei is a full professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She obtained her PhD degree from the department of Materials at ETH Zurich, following master and undergraduate studies at the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University. With backgrounds in chemistry, biomaterials science and surface science and technology, the principal research fields of Prof. Pei lie in surface functionalization and analysis, polymer-based coatings, and cell-material interactions at biointerfaces. Recently she has mainly focused on the fundamental research and development of next-generation biodegradable metals (e.g. Mg, Zn) for various implants applications, and with new hydrogen-biomaterials have been further developed and studied. Prof. Pei has been awarded the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund. She also presides over National key R&D projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China, SSSTC Sino-Swiss Science and Technology Cooperation program, Shanghai Natural Science Foundation, and so on. She has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal papers, including in Adv. Func. Mater., Biomaterials, Bioact Mater, Acta Biomater, ACS AMI, and more than 10 Chinese and international PCT patents. She serves in editorial board of the journal "Smart Materials in Medicine", and is elected a member of the Youth Committee of the Chinese Materials Research Society, member of the Interventional Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering (CMBE), and council member of the Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Association. She also participated in organizing and co-organizing academic activities, such as the "International Engineering Science and Technology Development Strategy High-end Forum - Medical Additive Manufacturing Frontier Technology and Product Transformation Conference" and the " Annual Conference of of Biometal Branch of Chinese Society for Biomaterials (CSBM) ".

    Research Direction

Biointerfaces; Advanced functional coatings; Biodegradable, hydrogen-evolution materials; Cell-Material Interactions.

    Scientific Research Achievements

Mainly addresses the critical scientific and technological problems of integrated functions of "controlled biodegradation-bioadpabability" with rational surface modifications on biodegradable metal-based (magnesium, zinc, etc.) biomaterials and devices; and realizes controlled hydrogen release, induced tissue regeneration with the underlying  mechanisms clarified.
